If you manage to snag a reservation, you gotta go big at Carbone. My expectations were sky- high; what was this elusive restaurant where the wealthy choose to wine and dine, the most talked- about MFG restaurant in the city? They definitely play up the idea of exclusivity, with their curtains drawn across all the windows. Walking in, I'm immediately reminded of Minetta Tavern. You draw back the curtain to reveal an old- school classic establishment, dimly lit, a little bougie, a little cramped, and everyone is having a grand old time. And that's the thing - you're not so mad about paying such high prices when you can dine in an environment like this. ![]() ![]() Carbonemys
I felt like I was in a different era, it was the age of decadence hidden behind those curtains. And the service and food played their role perfectly. An old gentleman with thick red plastic- rimmed glasses in a matching deep red suit introduced himself as our waiter - sounds crazy but that look totally worked for him. He hands us menus that are the size of posterboards. Despite the size, they're not actually very descriptive so pick whatever they recommend. In terms of food, let's start with the bread basket. Filled to the brim with exactly 6 pieces of garlic bread, sesame bread, and tomato- pizzadough- like bread for the 6 of us, served with pepperoni arranged in a flower and a dish of pickled cauliflower. As if that's not enough, someone comes around with a giant wheel of parmesan and cuts you off a hefty piece. That was JUST the free bread basket. We ordered burrata and caesar salad, both of them served with above- and- beyond presentation (the burrata was cut with special burrata scissors). The spicy rigatoni vodka is as amazing as everyone says, as is the veal parmesan. Dover piccata is filleted tableside, gorgeous and served with amazing browned butter. The only so- so dish was the scungilli shells which I thought was too fishy. We finished with some of the best rainbow cookies I've ever had (on the house, another nice touch), and ordered a giant slice of perfectly boozy hazelnut tiramisu with a giant ladyfinger perched on top. Bliss. The reason I am taking off a star is because they charged us per plate of rigatoni, which they did not confirm with us - I was honestly a bit tiffed because I could've done with half of my portion considering the massive portions of everything else. TLDR: If you're feeling spendy, Carbone is an amazing restaurant and an amazing experience. It will be over- the- top, and completely memorable. It's hard not to have a grand old time with classic cocktails, great wine, and amazing spicy rigatoni vodka. Some of the best Italian food I've ever had. Carbone is more than a restaurant- it's truly a food experience. From the second you walk in, you can feel that it's a special place. You are first greeted by the waitstaff who all are beautifully dressed- some wearing maroon suits. The interior is gorgeous and upscale. The menus are huge and awesome and make you feel tiny- but in a fun way. I have so much to say about the food that I'm salivating while writing this reminiscing on my recent birthday dinner. They first brought out this amazing bread with just a bit of tomato sauce on top and it was the perfect way to start the meal. Then they came out with Parmesan bites and spicy Salami. The combination was fantastic. We ordered the Prosciutto and Mozzarella for our appetizer and since I'm a huge fresh Mozzarella lover- I fell in love fast. Next came our entrees. I ordered the spicy vodka rigatoni which I've literally seen so many photos of on Instagram, I really felt like I was missing out on it for years. It did not disappoint. Perfectly cooked and fresh, incredible sauce. My boyfriend got the squid ink lobster ravioli which was rich and absolutely delicious. We also had their chocolate mousse cake with blackberries for dessert which was soooo amazing but we were beyond stuffed and couldn't even finish it, which for us, doesn't happen often. Overall an amazing place to celebrate a birthday or any special event. They had seamless service and we loved the evening. This place is incredible. Meatballs, pasta, veal parm, the works! Going to come back here next time in the city! My family was visiting this week, so I browsed through my yelp bookmarks a lot to find the perfect restaurants to take them to. Carbone has been on my list for a while but I just haven't been able to make it yet. Plus, reservations are incredibly difficult to snag. I looked on their online reservation system via Reserve, and miraculously, they had an opening for 6: 1. I immediately signed up for an account on Reserve and booked it. Remember to cancel ahead of time if you can no longer make it as they charge $5. Our party was a teeny bit late to our reservation time, but they still accommodated us and even allowed some of us that arrived a little earlier to get seated first. Once you walk in, you really are transported to a different place with great ambiance. Tables are a bit cramp but I guess that's part of the experience : ). Service is a little pushy (they "suggest" doubling on portions, and when we said we would just order later if we were still hungry, we were told the kitchen doesn't operate that way and we couldn't do that) and I didn't love the attitude, but whatever, wasn't super terrible. Also, ridiculous pricing (really hurts the piggy bank!), but I guess if you're willing to go to carbone, you shouldn't care about the prices anyways..! To start, they serve you up some complimentary bread, this pickled cauliflower dish, and some salami. THAT BREAD BASKET is to die for! There's a glistening pizza bread that sits on top, and then below that, there's some crispy garlic bread I believe, and some sour dough. Every piece was amazing. Don't believe this is on the menu, but the burrata was extremely well made and creamy! They cut the knot for you on the table, and stuff it with an eggplant mix / sea salt. Spicy Rigatoni Vodka $2. Their most famous dish apparently. At first, I looked at it and thought, wow this is literally plain pasta with regular vodka sauce and NO toppings/other ingredients, how lame/how can they charge so much!? Once you bite into it, you kinda understand. The texture is like no other pasta I've ever tasted. For all my mandarin speakers out there, I would describe the texture as being super Q! Not al dente, but chewy in a good way : ). Kinda like if you mixed pasta dough with mochi. FYI - The server recommended that we get 2 servings of this, so we did.. NOT worth $5. 8 bucks!!! Fettuccine con Funghi $3. Meh, didn't really think anything of this dish. The fettuccine did not have the same chewiness : (. Bass Oreganata $3. Fish was cooked well, wish the skin was a little crispier! Nothing too special though. Veal Marsala $6. 4. This was really good!!! I was expecting a flattened piece of veal steak, but instead, it was perfectly sliced pieces that were pink in the middle and looked exactly like regular steak. This was delicious..!!! Steamed Asparagus $1. Worst scam ever. Literally maybe 8 sticks of steamed asparagus. RIDICULOUS PRICING. This was just OK. Wish the tiramisu cake was more moist. The madeleine- like cookie on top was pretty good though! I think this place is great to come once in a blue moon, but definitely too pricey to make this a regular. If I had friends coming in from out of town, I would definitely put this as a spot to take them to! SOME. From start to finish this place is amazing. Ambiance: Great mix of old school NYC flare with modern touches. Amazing decor, perfect for date night or an intimate dinner with close friends. Service: Exactly what you'd expect while fine dining A+ service from the moment you walk in. Food: TO DIE FOR. They start you off with an assorted bread basket (you must have their garlic bread) and delicious pickled veggies. My group split their Italian chopped salad which was divine and I had the vodka pasta... I can't wait to go back the next time I'm in NYC. I had been trying to come here for A YEAR and finally was able to make a reservation for my birthday. The spice rigatoni is definitely delicious but we were told this was family style and those dishes are NOT family style. If you're not getting a meat or fish dish, the pasta can be eaten for 1. Service was also SO slow and the waiter felt so bad so he brought us 2 desserts so he redeemed himself : )5/1. Yes, reservations are hard to come by, but it's worth it to have the experience. Carbone came highly recommended from a few close friends, so my wife took me here for my birthday lunch. They did not disappoint. The service was exquisite, and left absolutely nothing to be desired. We picked on the fresh mozzarella, garlic bread, and chorizo while deciding what to have. We ended up sharing: Caesar Salad, "Spicy" Rigatoni Vodka, Ribs and Peppers, the veal park, and for dessert the carrot cake with ginger ice cream. The food was excellent but if it was as equally as great as the service was this would be hands down my favorite restaurant of all time. This is not a knock on the food, I enjoyed everything - it's a compliment to the excellent serve staff. STARS. THIS PLACE. HANDS DOWN BEST ITALIAN IN NYC. JUST GO. Okay, let me reel myself in a bit. You walk in and you're transported back in time in Italy. The place itself is small but cozy and intimate. The décor is very old style, classic New York. There's fab music playing in the back and the waiters are a delight. Now onto the food. This is the best Italian food I have ever eaten and the best I think you will. I know that's a loaded statement but I am confident enough in the food that you will agree with me once you try it. My boyfriend took me here as a surprise on a special occasion and I could not be more excited as I have had this place bookmarked FOREVER but 1. BUT TRUST ME, its so so so worth it.
